adi.

Well, yesterday's New Paper and this morning's Straits Times both carried the news about the young boy in Malaysia who might be expelled from school.

What's so special about that? The one special thing about this boy, Adi, is that he was able to count from 1 to a million at least, when the school was teaching the students to count from 1 to 10. That's a big difference. And he also could do perform calculus at his age. And he challenged 230 students and teachers to a maths quiz, which he won. All this at the age of 7, I think.

The reason he's threatened with expulsion? The school feels that he skips classes too often. Quite amazingly, the reason he offers is that he finds school too boring. His level of mathematics is far beyond what the school is currently offering. So why shouldn't he be bored?

The fact that he is able to claim that school is boring, and back it up with his proven mathematical prowess, shows that he is indeed a gem. Very raw at his tender age, but a gem nonetheless. His parents have done the perfectly right thing in seeking permission from the Education Ministry in Malaysia to allow him to study in Kuala Lumpur, where I hope he can receive education at a level which befits his intelligence.

I'm deeply disappointed with the school, for not only failing to recognise his talents, but also for threatening to expel such a talented young genius just because he understands the lessons even before they are being taught. How pathetic can this get?

Well, as a side note, I also realised that my dear school, Dunman Secondary, will be undergoing upgrading works soon. Thankfully, they'll not have to move campus like some other schools being upgraded. So I can happily go back and visit the school when the chance arises. I certainly hope that after upgrading, the school will have in place all those extra areas that were promised to us when I was there, most notably, the Heritage Centre. It has somehow failed to materialise despite our fund raising efforts. But after this upgrading, it had better be there.
